How to read a tide table
Each day shows the times of high and low water and the predicted height in metres above chart datum. Most of the New Zealand coast is semidiurnal, so you will see two highs and two lows a day, each arriving about 50 minutes later than the day before.
Spring tides, with the greatest range, follow the new and full moon. Neap tides, with the smallest range, follow the quarter moons. Predictions do not include the effect of wind or barometric pressure, which can shift the real water level by a surprising amount during a storm.
